Cornel West and Pragmatism Cornel West is the most important philosopher in America today. He is a public fgure and influences many people. Cornel is a African American born in Tulsa and grew up in Sacramento which heavily influenced who he is today, the city has a heavily populated with black power groups. West being a devout Christian, never Joined the Black Panthers movement although he did want to. In his early life he praised Malcolm X and the Black Panthers too. He then went to Harvard University where he says it broadened his thought immensely. He then went to Princeton where he got is PhD and wrote his dissertation on Neo Pragmatist thought. Because West is pragmatic, he is an activist and is often in the public eye for his actions. The first time I heard of or saw Dr. West was on television. An HBO show called Real Time: with Bill Maher was on one night and I was viewing it and that was when I first saw Dr. West. They talked in a round table discussion about several modern topics and I liked his view on nearly all the subjects. He helped my decision in pursuing philosophy in school. The host of the show would bring up how he wasnt Just some smart person hat told others what to do, he would go out with the people and change things with them. I admire this and wanted to do the same. This is what makes Dr. West so important to American philosophy in my time. He is showing people and especially the next generation that it can be cool to study philosophy and it is not all about reading and studying. He gets on shows and radio stations and talks about things that everyday people can do. Dr. West makes philosophy worth studying and practicing. He would want people to practice it more than study it. He teaches at ome of the biggest universities in the world and gets paid very well, instead of keeping his money and being wealthy he takes half the salary he deserves and donates often. This is him practicing thought and not Just thinking. What I liked most about Dr. West was that he was funny and humanistic, he was forgiving to others when they disagreed and would constantly be laughing. This was his pragmatic view of philosophy showing in real life. Neopragmatism was a thought movement in the 1960s that was lead by Richard Rorty. The movement was made to bring back classical pragmatism but with more mphasis on language and linguistics. Pragmatism is a philosophy that is an approach that assesses the truth of meaning of theories or beliefs in terms of the success of their practical application. This means that life is made up of our actions and not our beliefs or what we think life should be. It is also very naturalistic, where nature should be saved and thought about. This philosophy of life fell to the waist side in America by the early 1900s and it wasnt till the 60s that it would make a comeback. Richard Rorty started writing on it again and it became a major view again. Without Rorty, Dr. West may not have known about pragmatism till later in his life and that could have shaped his career differently. Neopragmatism has more of a focus on language and linguistics in a sense that these things needed to be taught to every person. We should not talk about how education can help, we need to go out and educate and make sure every person can speak what is on their mind freely. While at Harvard, Dr. West wrote his first major works on ideas from neopragmatism, Marxist ideas, and Emersonian thought. He is writing on popular thoughts of the time and putting them altogether unlike others who take one side nd stay with it. He changes how philosophy is done in America by not picking one side and saying that it is the way to go, he puts many ideas together. This could be because he originally goes to study language and so he understands that our language can be a barrier because it limits us from time to time so we should mix different ideas so we are not barriered in. Dr. West now does constant interviews and makes videos advocating for people to change. This is what I call West Pragmaticism, a way of life that not only leads to one doing actions to help the world, but also advocating for others to do what is humanly ight. Being a Christian, he knows that it is important to go out and to fight for the oppressed and to keep fighting for what is right. This is where he differs from many other pragmatists, they would not be in the public so much and would prefer to keep their views only to the intelligent. I have always wondered why Dr. West is unlike any other philosopher and why other pragmatists are not like him when it seems that being in the publics eye is part of the view. Cornel West is unlike any other modern or past philosopher. He holds no bias for any human, he is not sexist or homophobic r racist, although he does see the difference for all of them. He says that there will always be an oppressed people and it takes years for our minds to change. This country has fought for the slaves, then for women, than for African Americans, and now we are fighting for homosexuals. In one of his interviews he says that once this fight is over and homosexuals are allowed to be who they are, there will be another oppressed group to rise and wanted to be treated equal. He hates that this will keep continuing but he understands it; for this, he does not teach people that they should e accepting of Just these types of people but to accept all peoples. If someone kills someone else, he does not care who it is, it is unacceptable. He first supported Barack Obama for president but since the time, the president has used drone strikes hundreds of times to kill. Recently Dr. West had been speaking on why he believes the president is a war criminal and how he is not the person who he believed he would be. Most think that because both the president and Dr. West are both African Americans that he would support him but Dr. West holds him to a higher standard or that and wont give him a break. Learning from Du-Bois, Dr. West knows that we as people should tight and stand up tor all people, even it the people witn authority over us disagree. The Marxist view is where this comes from. This view is what sets Dr. West apart from most other philosophers, especially in America. Marxism is strongly related to communism in most peoples minds and in American culture communism is pure evil. Many people try to stay away from Marxist ideas because they dont want to be harassed by the public and government. Du-Bois was harassed so much that he enounced the United States and moved at the end of his life, and he was marxist. Our country as a whole has grown since then but not much and that is Cornel West is one of the few promoting Marxist ideas. The others before Dr. West may have advocated that America needs a better education system. Only focusing on where they live and what will affect them, still pragmatic view but not as wide as saying the whole world, especially Africa needs better education systems. Dr. West would say something closer to the latter. He will also credit anyone if he knows that their ideas ere before his and he built on theirs. After watching Just one interview with him one will see that he credits all writers and thinkers before him for his thoughts. Most philosophers will do this at a young age then once they are revered by many, they become egotistical and see their views as correct only. This only makes me admire Dr. West more, he is humble and does not let fame get to his head. So Dr. West is influenced heavily by James, Pierce, Du-Bois, Emerson, Rorty, Malcolm-X, Marx, and others but is very different than they are. He takes racial ideas from Du-Bois and ixes them with socialist ideas from Marx and says that not only do the oppressed blacks need help from the world but everyone does. To him pragmatism is not the best thing to say about philosophy, as thinkers we should be doers and should be making actions in the real world, much different than the men we read about in class. For Dr. West action in the real world is the only thing that matters but without the views and thoughts of others they mean nothing, we must learn about these other thinkers too. A college education may have seemed out of reach for some individuals, who struggled in high school. A factory job or assembly line position was a more realistic goal to achieve. Throughout their childhood there was a dream of having a mansion, or a fancy car. Money was the center of their interests. They learned as they got older that these things were harder to accomplish than they imagined. People had to work long, tedious hours when they were young to get ahead for the future. There was the reality of a price to be paid in early life, but what they benefited later would be more than they could ever fathom. They would have to remember to work hard, and prove to others that they were a worthy people to take note of. This was only the beginning, however. They had to strive to do well in the community and in their place of employment. Even the little things that seemed insignificant made a bigger difference in later life. There were times when that nothing job they had meant something more later on. They could have never known when that past job supervisor could have been a place of reference for a job opportunity or an advancement. There should be a certain part of people that is devoted to their education. This will be something that will be noted later in college, or sometimes in the job that was so important for them to have. The studying may have been a little stressful at times, but if people had not learned to balance their schedule at a young age how would they cope as adults with a family, and occupation? Jordan Baker says, â€Å"Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be across the bay.† The color green is traditionally a symbol of hop and youth and that is what Gatsby is hoping to find beyond it. When Gatsby and Daisy meet, he tells her about how he has watched the green light that burns at the end of her dock. For so long that light has been a symbol of his dream, of something he has wanted more than life itself. Gazing at it so much, Gatsby must have believed that if he could only have Daisy he would be eternally happy. In chapter four he suddenly has her and the light is just a light again. It doesn’t seem that Daisy could ever be as wonderful as Gatsby’s dream of her. Dreams, sadly for Gatsby are most often longed for rather than made a reality. There are several reasons why I have selected the flute over the others. Another example would be when she is interrupted by a skeptical comment from the older man she continues, â€Å"Little Jack is hungry for his supper.† Jack laughs as she draws to a close, â€Å"My nipples are a little sore from nursing Eliza Rosamund.† Stirring traces of sight, smell, sound, and touch, all feed into her introspective outlook, but strangely. The story, â€Å"No One’s a Mystery† by Elizabeth Tallent explores the relationship of two characters, whom are both rather disputable. The young girl in the story remains unnamed and could be considered naà ¯ve and dim-witted while the guy, Jack, is a chauvinist pig. He uses his 18 year-old admirer as an excuse to make himself think he is still young. It is a way to keep him in the frame of mind that he doesn’t need a wife, he can do what he wants and get what he wants without her. Jack doesn’t seem to want a predictable life. His comments to his admirer show that he isn’t ready to settle down with his wife. For the most part his comments are short and indirect, â€Å"It’s her,’ he said. ‘She keeps her lights on in the daytime. I cant think of a single habit in a woman that irritates me more than that.† This quote is showing Jack belittling his wife. It’s something that would be said in a high school relationship. He also puts her down once again by saying, â€Å"She thinks it’s safer. Why does she need to be safer? She’s driving exactly fifty-five miles an hour. She believes in those signs: ‘Speed Monitored by Aircraft.’ It doesn’t matter that you can look up and see the sky is empty† It’s like he is saying these comments to win his admirers affection. However when Jack saw his wife coming in the distance his actions showed little respect for his young admirer. Jack is a selfish person who only cares about himself. Usually cheaters do not look out for others but themselves but he demonstrates it in several ways. The girl notes â€Å"He pushed me down onto the dirty floor of the pickup and kept one hand on my head while I inhaled the musk of his cigarettes in the dashboard ashtray†. This is horrible to have to go through but the girl has fallen in love with him to the point where she doesn’t think anything is wrong with the situation. â€Å"When he saw that I was going to stay still he took his hand from my head and ran it through his own dark hair†. Jack has to be really inconsiderate to put someone through that. He cares for her about as much as he does with all his pop-tops that are on his truck floor. Later on in their trip Jack tells his admirer what he thinks she will be writing in her diary. â€Å"I wonder what I ever really saw in Jack. I wonder why I spent so many days just riding around in his pickup. It’s true he taught me something about sex†. This comment here shows a little about how Jack sees their situation. He knows its not going to last forever and it will come to and end with in a year. You can tell the two have a very comfortable sexual relationship by the â€Å"taught me something about sex† line in his speech. They are both so comfortable around it that he feels free to joke about it around her. Jack’s situation is not one that’s seen as mature or respectful among most people. He uses his lover for sex and keeps his wife in the dark of the whole situation. It is selfish and wrong for Jack to be acting like this. Jack does what he wants all day and has no respect for either of the two women involved in this affair, therefore showing a childish attitude.

The agent hadn’t e-mailed my friend for almost a year, but what’s worse, my friend hadn’t picked up the phone either.    This, I suppose, is what they call â€Å"being in limbo† and it sure isn’t pretty.    As the world of publishing changes around us, writers have more control than ever before over our own careers, what publishing deals we accept, and how we choose to publish in the first place. In this world of platforms and literary celebrities, agents want writers who can take over some of that control, who can be in charge, who know what it means to work towards not one book, but an entire career.    The bitter truth is this: An agent can be your best ally, your biggest fan, and your most aggressive salesperson. But she can only work with what she has. If publishers are looking for clients with platforms, she’s going to have a hard time convincing them of your marketability if you’re not even on Twitter.    So how can you make your relationship with your agent a two-way street and help your own career 1. Make your platform irresistible. When my agent discovered a health issue a few weeks after signing me on, he gave me the option of waiting for his treatment to finish or finding new representation. I stayed on, and in the three months before we communicated again, I started building my platform and growing my reach. Therefore, the purpose of this research study is to look at both sides of the arguments of death penalty. It starts off with the description of death penalty and the different types of death penalty. Interesting issues are brought up like the wrongful executions, death penalty being deterrent to crime and the alternatives to death penalty. There are evidence to both sides of the argument in whether the death penalty should be abolished or not. Based on the investigation that is carried out which evaluates the causes, effects and ways to solve the question of death penalty, the many reasons for why death penalty should be abolished is being proven and thus concluding the thesis statement. When the word death penalty is used, it makes yelling and screaming from both sides of extremist. One side may say deterrence, while the other side may say, but you may execute an innocent man. Death penalty is defined as the killing of a person by judicial process as a punishment for an offense. Today, one of the most debated issues in the Criminal Justice System is the issue of capital punishment or the death penalty. There are 8 types of death penalty practiced in an official capacity in the modern world. Lethal injection is the practice of injecting a person with a fatal dose of drugs for the express purpose of causing an immediate death. Gas chamber executions are where the prisoner is strapped to a chair inside a sealed gas chamber. The executioner (standing outside of the chamber) pulls a lever dropping potassium cyanide pellets into a vat of sulfuric acid, flooding the chamber with lethal hydrogen cyanide gas. The electric chair is also another common form of capital punishment. The prisoner is shaved, strapped to a chair, and fitted with electrodes attached to conductive spongesone on the head, one on the legcreating a direct current. The prisoner is then hooded. The executioner pulls a switch, and 2,000 volts race through the prisoners body as the internal body temperature approaches 140 degrees. Executions by firing squad works on strapping the victim to a chair with five sharpshooters ai ming at the victims heart and all five pulling the trigger. There is also death by hanging. The prisoner stands on trapdoor, and a rope descends from a wooden beam overhead. The rope is fastened around the prisoners neck in a Hangmans noose, which tightens when pulled upon. The executioner pulls a lever opening the trapdoor and dropping the prisoner, who ideally dies quickly due to a broken neck. Death by stoning is arguably the worlds oldest form of execution. The prisoner is buried either up to his waist (if male) or up to her shoulders (if female) and then pelted with stones by a crowd of volunteers until obviously battered to death. Death by beheading is probably the most humane form of punishment. The victim is restrained, usually forced to kneel, and the executioner removes the head by way of a sword or knife. Lastly, crucifixion is an ancient method of painful execution in which the condemned person is tied or nailed to a large cross (of various shapes) and left to hang until dead. Aim of report. There are a number of reasons on why some people are for the death penalty although majority is on the way of abolishing it. Some sees it as a way to better yet end the crime rates around the world. 2.1 Capital punishment holds the criminal accountable for his/her actions. Justice requires punishing the guilty even if only some can be punished and sparing the innocent, even if all are not spared. Morally, justice must always be preferred to equality. Justice cannot ever permit sparing some guilty person, or punishing some innocent ones, for the sake of equality-because others have been spared or punished. In practice, penalties could never be applied if we insisted that they can be inflicted on only a guilty person unless we are able to make sure that they are equally applied to all other guilty persons. Anyone familiar with the law enforcement knows that punishments can be inflicted only on an unavoidable shudder selection of the guilty (Bedau, H., 1977). Irwin Isenberg (1977) said, when you kill a man with premeditation, you do something different than stealing from him. I favor the death penalty as a matter of justice and human dignity even apart from deterrence. The penalty must be appropriate to the seriousness of the crime (p. 135). 2.2 Prevents recidivism. The death penalty protects the public from the most heinous criminals and it also protects us from psychiatrists, judges, parole boards, and celebrities who can too easily be hoodwinked by a practiced con-man determined to win his freedom in order to continue his criminal career. People on death row are unable to get out of prison and are waiting for the day they are put to death. Once they are put to death, there is absolutely no recidivism to worry about. 2.3 Death penalty is a deterrent to crime. If we do not know whether the death penalty will deter others, we will be confronted with two uncertainties. If we have the death penalty and achieve no deterrent effect, than, the life of convicted murderers has been expended in vain (from a deterrent point of view)-here is a net loss. If we have the death sentence, and deter future murderers, we spared the lives of future victims-(the prospective murderers gain, too; they are spared punishment because they were deterred). In this case, the death penalty is a gain, unless the convicted murderer is valued more highly than that of the unknown victim, or victims (Carrington, F., l978). 3. Why do some people oppose the death penalty? Majority of people oppose the death penalty as it brings more disadvantage to advantage. 3.1 The wrongful executions of an innocent person. Unlike all other criminal punishments, the death penalty is uniquely irrevocable. Although some proponents of capital punishment would argue that its merits are worth the occasional execution of innocent people, most would also insist that there is little likelihood of the innocent being executed. In Georgia in 1975, Earl Charles was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. A surviving victim of the crime erroneously identified Charles as the gunman; her testimony was supported by a jail-house informant who claimed he had heard Charles confess . Incontrovertible alibi evidence, showing that Charles was in Florida at the very time of the crime, eventually established his innocence but not until he had spent more than three years under death sentence. His release was owing largely to his mothers unflagging efforts.(35) 3.2 The high cost of the death penalty. It is sometimes suggested that abolishing capital punishment is unfair to the taxpayer, on the assumption that life imprisonment is more expensive than execution. A murder trial normally takes much longer when the death penalty is at issue than when it is not. Litigation costs including the time of judges, prosecutors, public defenders, and court reporters, and the high costs of briefs are mostly borne by the taxpayer. 3.3 The victims families perspectives on the death penalty. Numerous families and loved ones of murder victims support alternatives to the death penalty for many reasons, including: The death penalty process is a traumatizing experience for families, often requiring them to relive the pain and suffering of the death of their loved one for many years. Life without parole provides certain punishment without the endless reopening of wounds. 3.4 Inadequate legal representation. Almost all defendants in capital cases cannot afford their own attorneys. In many cases, the appointed attorneys are overworked, underpaid, or lacking the trial experience required for death penalty cases. There have even been instances in which lawyers appointed to a death case were so inexperienced that they were completely unprepared for the sentencing phase of the trial. Other appointed attorneys have slept through parts of the trial, or arrived at the court under the influence of alcohol. 3.5 Alternatives to the death penalty. In every state that retains the death penalty, jurors have the option of sentencing convicted capital murderers to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The sentence is cheaper to tax-payers and keeps violent offenders off the streets for good. Unlike the death penalty, a sentence of Life without Parole also allows mistakes to be corrected. 3.6 Religious perspectives on death penalty. Most people are living with their own beliefs or religions though there are minorities of people who are free-thinkers. Almost all religions around the world regard executions as immoral. Among them are Christianity, Buddhism, Jewish, Islam and Judaism . 4.0 There are better methods to punish the offenders than death penalty. Death penalty can be too cruel to punish the offenders and no one should take the life of others other than God. Despite this, offenders are not excused from being punished for what they did to others as they still need to be punished but just with other alternatives to the death penalty. 4.1 Life imprisonment without the possibility of parole plus restitution. The most popular alternative to the death penalty is life imprisonment without the possibility of parole plus restitution. This alternative not only costs much less than capital punishment, but also keeps the criminal in jail for the rest of his life so he cannot return back to society. Restitution means that while the prisoner is in jail, he will be put to work with all the money made going to the family of the victim. 4.2 Prison with parole. The average sentence for someone convicted of murder is twenty years. The average time spent in jail for a convicted murderer before being released is around 8.5 years. These numbers mean that most murderers do receive parole and go back into society. John DiIulio writes that even though some paroled murderers remain dangerous, the vast majority of [them] never commit another murder or violent crime. Many have not only gone straight but have continued paying their debt to society by making post-release restitution, manning youth and community outreach centers that work with juvenile felons, and more (Wall Street Journal, Dec. 15, 1997). 4.3 Reformatories. Ehud Olmert Ali Purtell Ehud Olmert, a former prime minister of Israel, was motivated to try and make peace among the Israelis and Arabs. Other leaders of Israel used violence to try and resolve the conflict but it only made things worse. Olmert wanted to use peace instead of violence to try and end the Arab-Israeli conflict. His efforts to achieve peace affected the Arab-Israeli conflictbut without long term results. Olmert has worked as the former prime minister of Jerusalem, Deputy Premier, Finance Minister, and Mayor of Jerusalem, giving him many years of experience and knowledge regarding world affairs like the Arab-Israeli conflict. Ehud Olmert met with Palestinian President, Mohamed Abbas, in September of 2008 and assured him that Olmert’s plan for peace would not require any military presence. This allowed Mohamed to see that Olmert really wanted to make peace. Ehud Olmert didn’t always use peaceful means to handle the Palestinians and other countries. When he was elected as Mayor for Israel in 1993, he supported the growth of Jewish settlements around Jerusalem blocking out the Palestinians and other religions. Later, when he was elected as prime minister, he realized the only way to resolve the conflict was to address it peacefully and through negotiations. Israel has been dealing with Palestinian pressures to give back the land that they consider â€Å"theirs† and other leaders have had different views on how to handle aggression from the Palestinians. Ehud Olmert’s views included handling the conflict with peace and not using violence. He suggested to Mohamed Abbas a convergence plan which centered around the idea that the Israeli people would be forced out of the West Bank which is an are... ...m. A part of the problem today in this conflict is the people not willing to change or go along with what their leaders enforce and their ideas. Overall, Olmert as a prime minister was successful in being consistent in using negotiations to try to create peace even though long term peace was never gained. He worked hard to come up with plans and agreements, and met with different important figures in the world regarding the Arab-Israeli conflict. Using peace has prevented some violence between the Palestinians and Israelis as well as other countries. While Olmert is not in office anymore, he still believes a peaceful approach is the answer to help end this conflict.

This means that they are listening to each person and help them to live the lives they choose by working close with their families and friends.
